Tommie SmithAnyone who has ever been the kid picked last because of how they looked, or worse not given the same chance to play because of their race or creed can appreciate the podium statement made by Tommie Smith and John Carlos in “68. Tom in Arlington provides this months inspirational moment.

My favorite moment is Tommie Smith and John Carlos doing their definitely Black Power salute in front of the notorious racist/antisemite Avery Brundage and the entire world at the ’68 Olympics. I was is high school. All I could think about was how brave they were to stand there and tell the whole world what they felt about race issues in America . . . there would be no hiding from their choice.

2.5 years later, Carlos was one of my track coaches.
