Did you know that it’s possible to retrain your movement patterns? The secret is repetition. With enough repetitive movements, one can train their brain to remap their habitual movements. This is an important factor that I learned in ski instruction. I am using the same concept to retrain movement patterns in patients with motor deficits which create injury. I am not referring only to people with neurological weakness.
I am talking about individuals who lack proper movement patterns because they are not using their muscles correctly. Improper muscle use can lead to injury and complication. For example, if you have weakness in your posterior tibial tendon, you can do many repetitive movements of turning your foot inwards and up to strengthen the area. There are many progressions to help prevent injuries and you need to make sure you are using the correct exercises.
